Study Region

The rural areas in Germany differ in their sensitivity and adaptability to climate change. Within the research area “North German Plain” four model regions, on a west-east gradient from the dutch to the polish borders, were examined exemplarily.

The four model regions were:

  • Administrative District Diepholz
  • Administrative District Uelzen
  • Region Fläming
  • Administrative District Oder-Spree

They differed distinctively from each other in respect to their natural assets, land use preferences, economic factors, and society demands. The study areas, therefore, facilitated studies of interactions of the land use systems, regionally different consequences of climate change and increasingly globalised markets.
